Groningen is the capital city of the province of Groningen in the Netherlands. With a population of 181,819, it is by far the largest city in the north of the Netherlands. Groningen is a university city, in which usually more than 45,000 students are staying.

By Air
There is an airport about 10km outside the city of Groningen, in Eelde. This airport is international but quite small. Other flight connections require a train journey; Amsterdam Schiphol Airport is the biggest and best connected airport, but Bremen and Eindhoven are a similar distance away by train (2-3 hours) and are well served by budget airlines. Train tickets for these locations are typically 30 EUR one way.
By Train
It is easiest to arrive in Groningen by train into the City of Groningen. Groningen city, although on the edge of the province, is a transport hub; lines running to the north of the province join the main rail network here.
Convenient services run the south of the country. Regular services run from Utrecht, Amsterdam and Schiphol, among other locations; some are direct and some require a change at Amersfoort. From Schiphol the journey is typically 2h 30m.
By train from Schiphol > Groningen : There is a direct connection every hour at xx:19hr. Please board the front of the train, as the train will be split halfway down in Zwolle and the back end will go to Leeuwarden instead of Groningen. At Schiphol station, the front of the train is in the direction Amsterdam, the back is in the direction Hoofddorp (as indicated at the platform).
Trains also run from Leeuwarden in Friesland, and to Germany. Bremen can be reached in about 2 hours 40 minutes, with one change.

By Car
You can travel in Groningen using your own or rented car, although attendees are advised to travel to Groningen by public transport because the parking facilities are scarce. Park your car at a "Transferium" and travel by bus to the city for a small fee. For parking you can also use this map for parking garages in the centre.
For car rental you can go to Century Autoverhuur , which is located near the Martiniplaza (see above).
Groningen has the least busy roads of the Netherlands. Only at rush-hour (monday - friday from 07.00 to 09.00 and from 16.00 to 18.00) there can be a few small traffic-jams but nothing serious.
By Taxi
Taxi’s can be found on the center market “De grote markt” where they line up. They can be recognized by their blue licenseplates. Also you can call a taxi-company at +31 (0)50 549 4940. The fare within the city of Groningen usually should not surpass 15 to 20 euro’s.
By Bus
The total of Groningen is accessible through bus travel. For a routeplanner by bus, you can visit the website of the local bus company http://www.9292ov.nl/ . In the bus you can pay with cash or with a so called “strippenkaart”, which can be acquired at supermarkets, bookshops and tabacco/magazine-shops.
